My Story
My name is Johanna and I'm the creator and founder of Johanna's Beezwax.
I create small batch products with every ingredient in mind for the health and happiness of your skin.
All of my life, I've struggled with eczema. I've had it worse as a child, where I would be covered in dry red patches that were painful and unbearable without oatmeal baths and lots of lotion. Having dry skin everyday while having flare ups on occasion, was what I grew up with but didn't really ask questions on why, assuming this was merely the cards I was dealt.

Most people know of eczema but don't know what it actually is and that there are different types. It is a group of conditions that cause rashes, dry skin ending in cracked skin if not dealt with. It's itchy, painful and annoying, sometimes even feeling it in your joints depending on how severe. The National Eczema Association explains that, "when an irritant or an allergen from outside or inside the body 'switches on' the immune system, it produces inflammation. It is this inflammation that causes the symptoms common to most types of eczema."

Saying that, I didn't realize things I've been eating could cause reactions to my immune system, as well as allergens I put on. Our skin is the biggest organ, so it makes sense that anything we put on it, our body would absorb. This is why I changed drastically how I approached body products and looked into more natural ingredients that weren't harming my body. There are so many toxins all around us, why not help ourselves by lowering that amount and helping it along with nutrients and vitamin-rich products?

Along my search, I found chapsticks were one of the most guilty for these types of toxins but because it's so small and not something people think about, it was overlooked. I looked into the ingredients put in and was horrified to find out how it actually causes more dryness by sucking out moisture and some actually cause addiction. Some of the ingredients that lead to addiction are parabens, BHA, BHT, mineral oils, fragrances and phthalates, and any endocrine disrupters. At times these ingredients will give you a soothing feeling but doesn't hydrate. These ingredients either lock out moisture or suck moisture from your lips, even if they feel oily or refreshing at first.
Looking into what chemicals put into your body products do was like going down the rabbit hole. I was overwhelmed and felt defeated with such conflicting information in which one source would say "this is horrible for you, causes allergies, cancer, etc." but would find the next one saying it was all false and actually perfectly safe.

I wanted an alternative to these weird chemicals so I started looking into more natural lip balms with better ingredients. I found some but they seemed to be really heavy with beeswax to the point of not being able to feel the lip balm on my lips. That's when I decided to make my own. I still wanted beeswax but needed other, more oily-based products, that would glide on better. Grape seed oil does just that. Plus it has vitamin E, which is great for skin and many other benefits, like having anti-inflammatory properties.

At first, I assumed it would only be for me but soon friends and family tried it and encouraged me to share with the world. As does everyone, I had my self-doubts and reservations about starting my own company. It was daunting but I've come to realize, if you don't try, you've already failed. My husband, alongside some friends and family, have encouraged me to share with the world my handcrafted lip balms and my story on how even through doubts, pains and mistakes, you shouldn't ever give up but instead use them as lessons.
